Knowledge Audits/Assessments

A knowledge audit or assessment is a systematic examination of an organization’s capacity to adopt knowledge management. A knowledge assessment also reveals the nature, state and health of an organization’s knowledge.

TMSC’s knowledge assessments cover four areas:

  1. People: a critical examination of the roles, responsibilities, and cultural capacity to adopt knowledge sharing practices and behaviors. At the request of clients, TMSC can focus on specific teams, business units, or communities.
  2. Processes: a methodical evaluation of an organization's existing processes that support the management of knowledge. In addition, a review is conducted of how knowledge is managed around essential core processes.
  3. Content: an in-depth analysis of content (data, information, and knowledge) focuses on structure, clarity, style, consistency, and value.
  4. Technology: a systematic review of existing technology enablers. This reveals how current technology can be used or improved to increase knowledge flow and sharing. At the client's request, technological needs are assessed to support a buy/build strategy.

TMSC’s knowledge assessments vary in depth and scope. Thematically, TMSC can concentrate on one of the four elements of people, processes, content, or technology. Depending upon the goals of the assessment, we can also focus on one business unit or a critical area of business, or perform a broad assessment right across the organization.

The duration of knowledge assessment varies depending on the depth and scope. A simple assessment takes 3 to 5 days, a moderate assessment up to a month, and a detailed assessment up to six months. All assessments include clear actionable recommendations.
